Step #4: Start Research

If your child has autism, chances are you're well into research mode. Fortunately for us, we live in an age where incredible amounts of information are only a few keystrokes away. The Internet is your friend; use it, but don't stop there. Establish a network of personal resources, such as parents (through support groups), doctors, and organizations dedicated to the study of autism. Talk to them frequently and stay up-to-date on the latest forms of intervention and news. Here are some ideas about how to get started.

The Internet (Search):

Search for keywords such as "autism resources", "autism treatment", and "autism support".

The Internet (Visit well-known institutions regularly, and keep up-to-date with the latest news):

    Autism Research Institute
    Talk About Curing Autism

Cure Autism Now

Autism Speaks

The Autism Perspective

Association for Science in Autism Treatment

Autism Today
    Autism Info

Read books. Here's a short list of high-ranking books among the autism community:

Talk with other parents of autistic children:

Seek out parents though support groups, autism message boards, or school/regional centers.

Subscribe to newsletter mailing lists. Most are inexpensive, if not free:

    Autism Research Institute (Newsletters)
    The Autism Perspective (Magazine)
    MIND Institute (Newsletters)
    Autism Society of America (Newsletters)
    The Autism Education Network
